The Sandwich
- History of The Steel City SandwichPittsburgh is a blue collar town built on the hard labor of steel workers. When the Great Depression hit, they had to work even longer hours just to make ends meet. With twenty hour work days and only twenty minute lunch breaks, the workers needed a delicious and filling meal before going back to work, but lacked the time to sit down and eat a full meal of protein, vegetables, and potatoes. Out of this desire, the Pittsburgh-style sandwich was born.The sandwich shops started serving slaw and fries on the sandwich. This way the steel workers could have a quick, tasty, satisfying meal to get them through the rest of their shift. Still to this day Pittsburgh sandwiches are made this way and are a staple of the Pittsburgh community.Why are Steel City Sandwiches so yummy? They're comfort food. There's no fancy mayo, buttered buns, or truffle oil. They don't need 'em! Fresh ingredients prepared properly taste great all on their own. We get our Italian bread fresh daily from Vito at Eagle Rock Bakery. We don't toast 'em or butter 'em cause they're fresh and perfect for holding overloaded sandwiches. The coleslaw is shredded daily and wilted with sugar and vinegar for over an hour to get that perfect vinegary slaw taste. The fries are hand cut, blanched to get that starchy taste out, and then cooked again at a higher temperature to get that perfect crispiness. Just a little salt and pepper and those fries are good to go. Three simple ingredients treated properly are the foundation for the perfect Steel City Sandwich.

The Yinzers
- Just Two Yinzers From da Burgh n'atTaylor Funkhouser and Neil Shuman moved to Los Angeles four years ago from Pittsburgh, happy to live in the vast multicultural city of Los Angeles. After a month of settling in, they quickly realized their culture of Pittsburgh-style sandwiches, homemade pierogies, and $3 microbrews were no where to be found.Like a Southern Californian separated from an In-and-Out Double Double Animal Style burger, they began to crave their hometown eats. They starting making Pittsburgh style sandwiches, pierogies, and microbrews in their home and quickly realized their SoCal friends loved Pittsburgh style food as much as they do. So they created Steel City Sandwich to share the wonderful food of Pittsburgh with the always-eager-to-try-something-new Angelenos.Executive Chef Shuman graduated from the Pittsburgh Culinary Institute Le Cordon Bleu with highest honors. Chef "Steel Neil" designed an authentic Pittsburgh menu with a few twists to keep it fresh for the foodies of Los Angeles for a Pittsburgh/L.A. fusion. Taylor Funkhouser not only brings to the table her experience in restaurant management and marketing but also her grandmother's homemade recipes. Forces combined, these two Pittsburghers have made it their mission to bring great food from PA to L.A.Steel City Sandwich logos were designed by fellow yinzer and L.A. transplant Matt Walker. This Penn State graduate created the perfect logo to represent the history, the epic sandwich, and the gritty attitude that is Pittsburgh!
